Brushes for texturing and cleaning timber. The steel-wire brush does the texturing — it cuts the soft early wood away and leaves the harder grain standing, which is the weathered, open-grain surface used on cladding and restoration work. The sisal brushes are gentler and come afterwards, smoothing the raised grain and cleaning residue off after staining. Using them in the wrong order gives a fuzzy surface rather than a crisp one.
