Brushes for texturing and cleaning timber, where the aim is to take out the soft early wood and leave the harder grain standing — the weathered, open-grain surface used on cladding, furniture and restoration work. The steel-wire brush is the one that does the texturing; it cuts the soft growth away and leaves the figure raised. Sisal brushes are gentler and used afterwards, for smoothing the raised grain and cleaning residue off a surface after staining. Using them in the wrong order gives you a fuzzy surface rather than a crisp one.
